Description
The metropolis is the only complete Romanesque building in the town. It was built in the 12th century before the Palais des Papes. It has been subject to numerous additions, including a virgin in gilded lead erected at the top of the tower in 1859. In the last two centuries of the Middle Ages, the cathedral was enlarged by opening up the side chapels, and the upper parts of the tower were rebuilt. Nicolas Mignard painted five of the paintings in the cathedral in the mid-17th century. The chapel, which was built by Pope John XXII to house his tomb, boasts a wealth of treasures: an assortment of liturgical vestments, sacred vessels and numerous works of art.
