    Description

Chateau Unang is located just outside the pretty village of Malemort du Comtat on the road to Methamis. Our road is on the right about a kilometre after the sign indicating the end of the village, there is a large sign. We are in the Vaucluse, 13 km from Carpentras and 5 minutes from the picturesque village of Venasque. We are in the AOC Ventoux Appellation, on the terraces of Comtat Venaissan protected from the mistral by the ‘giant’ Mont Ventoux. We are James and Joanna King. Both Scottish by descent, we have been living at magical Chateau Unang since 2003. James is the winemaker at this unique domaine surrounded by oak forests, above the Nesque river bed overlooking the Vaucluse plateau. Completely hidden from view, and sheltered from the mistral, it is a beautiful corner of Provence. At Chateau Unang we aim to produce the best wine possible from this unique terroir. We are in the appellation of Ventoux which is finally starting to receive some of the respect it now merits. We are proud to be one of the most renown and admired wine producers amongst a group of fine independent winemakers that are slowly making their mark in the Rhone Valley. We aim to keep the yields low and make the vines work to produce the best grapes possible. The white grapes are all grown in the valley at the bottom of the hill, where they benefit from the cooler early morning air, and staying shaded longer in the heat of summer giving our white wines the delicious fresh minerality with a lively acidity for which they are known. The red grapes are spread over the rest of the hill between 250 and 320 metres above sea level, divided by thick swathes of oak forest and groves of olives and cherry trees with an aspect south east. The white wines made in 2012 are certified organic and the reds made in 2013 are organic, completing our conversion of three years. We are keen to share our beautiful domaine and delicious wine with you. • You can come and taste the wine at the caveau during opening hours. • There are also two lovely vineyard walks that you might like to do, after wine tasting, with the accompanying leaflet. • You can also reserve wine tasting and visits to the chai, or a delicious picnic of local produce beside an 18th century stone basin, or if you are with a group a Gourmet Cheese and Wine Pairing on the Terrace of the Chateau for lunch or early evening. The Caveau is the centre of the vineyard, where the grapes arrive after having been hand-picked during the Vendange at the end of September-beginning of October, to the moment often several years later when they head off bottled, labeled and boxed to be consumed in the Vaucluse, in France or overseas. It is here that you should come to taste the wines, and perhaps visit the vats and barrels. We speak English and French and enjoy showing visitors our wines, and answering your questions about our wines and wine-making. The caveau is open in summer 6 days a week from 10.00 till 12.00 and 14.00 till 18.00, and in winter Monday to Friday from 10.00 till 12.00 and 14.00 till 17.00. You are very welcome to telephone to arrange a tasting outside of these hours. Telephone number of the Caveau is 0033(0)490 69 91 37. Description
