Description
This was probably one of the first streets in Avignon to be paved in the 16th century, with the temporary name ‘Rue de la Calade’ (‘Cobblestone Street’), giving way to Rue des Lices Antiques (‘Old List Street’) thanks to its location on the old lists of the town’s ramparts (which also explains its curved shape). Further along on your right, by the long speed bump after Musée Calvet, you can see a reminder of these times: the remains of one of Avignon’s earliest ramparts. Nowadays, the street is referred to as Faubourg Joseph-Vernet in allusion to Faubourg Saint-Honoré, its Parisian equivalent, as it is home to an array of elegant boutiques.
